Understanding Relational Trauma in the Early Years | Australian Childhood Foundation

September 16 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm

The early years are a critical time for children’s development, shaped by the relationships around them. When those relationships are unsafe or unpredictable, young children can experience relational trauma. This can deeply affect their emotional, social and brain development. This workshop supports practitioners working with children aged 0-5 to better understand the impact of relational trauma, build therapeutic responses, and care for themselves when supporting children and families affected by trauma.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the context of relational trauma for young children and it’s impact on brain development
  • Build awareness of vicarious trauma and the importance of self-care for practitioners
  • Develop ways to support colleagues who may be experiencing vicarious trauma
  • Use safe, responsive relationship tools for healing and change
  • Build respectful, non- judgemental relationships with families to support their engagement
