Childhood experiences of domestic and family violence and youth suicide | The Centre

August 20 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Free

Join the Centre for an online webinar exploring new research into the relationship between childhood experiences of domestic and family violence and youth suicide. Researchers will discuss findings from the Griffith University report Childhood experiences of domestic and family violence and related service system contact among young people who die by suicide, and consider what the findings mean for earlier, more holistic and child-centred service responses.

About the event

This webinar will examine how young people with identified childhood experiences of domestic and family violence became visible to different parts of the service system before their deaths, including through police and mental health-related contact. The discussion will focus on opportunities for trauma-informed, cross-agency intervention, improved referral pathways and support that recognises children and young people as victim-survivors in their own right.

Key themes from the session

  • The relationship between childhood experiences of domestic and family violence and youth suicide
  • How children and young people affected by domestic and family violence may become visible across service systems
  • The importance of recognising children as victim-survivors with their own safety, support and recovery needs
  • Opportunities for earlier, child-centred and whole-family intervention
  • The need for stronger collaboration between domestic and family violence, child and family, mental health, education, police and other service systems
  • The importance of postvention support for siblings and other children affected by suicide in the context of domestic and family violence.

Who should attend

This webinar is intended for practitioners, leaders, policy makers and researchers working across domestic and family violence, child and family services, child protection, youth services, mental health, suicide prevention, education, justice, policing and related sectors.

The session will be particularly relevant for professionals interested in strengthening integrated responses for children and young people experiencing domestic and family violence, and in identifying opportunities for earlier support before crisis points are reached.
