GADAus In Conversation webinar with Dr Chay Brown and Kayla Glynn-Braun | Gender and Disaster Australia
Explore how gender, colonisation, geography and systemic inequity shape the experiences of First Nations women during and after disaster.
This webinar will explore how gender, colonisation, geography and systemic inequity shape the experiences of women — particularly First Nations women — before, during and after disasters in Northern and Central Australia.
Grounded in the expertise and lived realities of women living and working directly in communities across the Northern Territory, this conversation will examine how systems designed to protect can instead perpetuate harm, and why community-led responses must be centred throughout disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
Importantly, this session recognises that Northern Territory communities cannot be treated as if they are the same. The experiences, strengths and challenges across remote, regional and urban communities are deeply place-specific.
What we’ll explore
- Defining what we often think of as disaster, with specific inclusion of heatwave and damage to eco-systems and Country
- The realities of violence against women in disaster contexts across Northern and Central Australia
- How systems often fail First Nations women before, during and after disasters
- The inequity in national reporting, response and mourning relating to Aboriginal women and children
- The critical role of First Nations-led, women-led, community-led and local specialist services in creating safety, resilience and long-term solutions
