Community of Practice for advanced practitioners working with victims/survivors of family violence
This four-part Community of Practice is designed for advanced practitioners working in mainstream services who want to strengthen their confidence, capability and critical practice when supporting women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
Through in-depth case discussions, reflective practice and facilitated exploration, participants will examine how culture, migration, language, racism, settlement experiences and systemic barriers can shape a woman’s experience of family violence and her engagement with services. The sessions will challenge assumptions and stereotypes while supporting practitioners to distinguish between cultural context and the perpetrator’s use of power and control.
Participants will have the opportunity to bring complex practice issues, explore culturally responsive approaches to risk assessment and safety planning, and consider how mainstream services can become more accessible, culturally safe and responsive to CALD women.
Across the four sessions, practitioners will build confidence to:
- Recognise and respond to the diverse ways family violence may present across cultural and migration contexts.
- Undertake culturally responsive risk assessment and safety planning without stereotyping or making assumptions.
- Identify how migration status, language barriers, racism and service-system responses can affect safety and help-seeking.
- Reflect critically on practice, including unconscious bias and the ways services can unintentionally reinforce barriers.
- Develop practical strategies for working collaboratively with interpreters, multicultural services and other supports.
- Apply a power-and-control lens while remaining attentive to culture, context and intersectionality.
This is an advanced practice space for practitioners who are ready to move beyond cultural awareness and develop deeper, more critical and confident practice with CALD women subjected to family violence.
