Pets Of The Homeless (POTH) was founded with a crucial mission in mind: to bridge the gap between human and animal welfare services. Their services aren’t limited to those experiencing homelessness but also those facing sever financial hardship. The minimum requirement is that you are receiving government welfare support. Please see Website details of any referrals needed for specific assistance.

Pet Food Bank– Located in Cheltenham where donated or purchased food is repackaged into smaller portions and distributed through a network of community partners across Victoria. These partners, includes soup kitchens, food pantries, and drop-in centres, directly supporting individuals facing hardship in their local communities. See Website for locations.

Vet Assistance- From routine procedures and vaccinations through to major surgery, Pets Of The Homeless contribute to — or completely cover — the cost of veterinary care where possible. Due to limited resources, they operate within a set budget for each individual they assist. The funding provided is intended to be a one-time support, not for ongoing veterinary needs throughout the pet’s life.

Fix A Friend Community De-sexing Days- The Fix-A-Friend initiative offers low-cost, subsidised community desexing to individuals holding concession or health care cards, ensuring this vital procedure remains affordable for those facing financial challenges. For a nominal fee pets receive comprehensive care including desexing, vaccination, microchipping, and parasite protection. The desexing clinics are held monthly, rotating to different locations. For upcoming dates, please head to the events page.

Farewell Fund- The Farewell Fund covers the cost of veterinary euthanasia for sick pets, as well as paying for cremation and the return of their ashes to their bereaved human companions.

If you reside in Victoria and require assistance with veterinary care for your pet, please click here for more information.

Safe Shelter

Many shelters will not allow pets meaning people often turn to their cars or the street. Pets Of The Homeless offer:

Foster Care up to 12 weeks of care placing pets in carefully matched foster homes. The service is currently available in metropolitan Victoria only and there is a nominal care fee to access this support. They recognise that sometimes circumstances require more time, so extensions beyond the initial period will be individually assessed.

Emergency Boarding In situations where a pet cannot be accommodated in a foster home, they also provide capped funding for temporary boarding at a commercial facility. Additionally, if a pet is unvaccinated, they can cover the cost of vaccination to ensure access to a boarding facility.

Wayss exists to provide support to people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, or people who have experienced family violence, to access safe, secure and affordable housing.
