Creating Connection Series: Young People – Understanding Young People With Autism | Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare

May 6 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

$260

This workshop is the first in a series of two.

Creating Connection Series: Young People—Understanding Young People With Autism introduces a range of innovative techniques for better understanding, communicating with, and meeting the needs of young people with autism.

The workshop approaches the topic of autism through the lens of information—how do neurotypical people and neurodivergent people experience the world around them? It guides participants to closely examine their own sensory experience of the world—what is ‘normal’ for us, and what do we take for granted about our own senses?

Using the categories in the formal definition of autism as a starting point, we explore how each common characteristic of autism – from social awkwardness to sensory sensitivities – can be understood as different ways of processing information. We demonstrate a variety of techniques to help a non-autistic person understand what it is like to be autistic.
