Community of Practice: Working with men from migrant and refugee backgrounds who use violence | inTouch

This Community of Practice brings together practitioners working with men from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds who use family violence. It provides a space to strengthen practice, share experiences and critically reflect on the complexities of working at the intersection of family violence, culture, migration and structural inequality.

The sessions will explore how culture, migration experiences, racism, settlement pressures, visa insecurity and social isolation can shape a man’s circumstances without excusing or explaining away his use of violence. Participants will consider how to maintain a clear focus on choice, responsibility, accountability and the safety of victim survivors, while developing culturally responsive approaches to engagement and intervention.

Through facilitated discussion, case reflection and practice-based learning, the Community of Practice will support practitioners to build confidence in working effectively with men from CALD communities and to identify approaches that avoid both cultural stereotyping and culturally unsafe practice.
