Practice in Action Forum: Engaging Men Who Use Family Violence, What Works? | Family Life & Relationship Matters
What happens when relationship breakdown, suicide risk and family violence intersect, and how can practitioners respond effectively during these critical periods of change?
In this keynote, men’s health researcher Michael Wilson (Movember Institute of Men’s Health, University of Melbourne) will explore the evidence around men’s risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours following intimate partner separation. Drawing on his extensive research in men’s mental health and suicide prevention, he will examine the factors that can contribute to suicide risk during periods of relationship breakdown and crisis.
Michael will also discuss the overlap between suicidality and intimate partner violence perpetration, highlighting the shared risk factors that can drive harm towards oneself and others during separation. The session will unpack the complex connections between mental health, masculinity, relationship change and violence, offering a deeper understanding of these critical issues. Providing practical insights for professionals working across family violence, mental health and related sectors.
